Get Buildings Tested for Asbestos Before Renovations or Demolitions

Image
Flooding after Hurricane Irma damaged many buildings in Jacksonville. People should test for asbestos before beginning renovations or demolitions of flood-damaged buildings. During the flooding in Jacksonville that resulted from Hurricane Irma in September, many homes and buildings experienced flood damage. Many structures will require renovations due to the damage. Others may need to be completely demolished and re-built. People should proceed with caution when renovating or demolishing buildings, particularly older structures, as older buildings may contain potentially harmful contaminants such as asbestos. Asbestos, once frequently used in construction of structures because of its fire-resistant qualities, may put people’s health in jeopardy. The substance, which causes cancer, can sicken people and potentially kill them if people inhale asbestos fibers in large quantities. Builders used asbestos in walls, flooring, insulation and other parts of structures for decades. Contact
